MR De Compostella 2022 is a blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, 20% Malbec, 9% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot
Tim Atkin named Bruwer Winemaker of the Year in his 2023 report, Greg Sherwood (MW) scored this vintage 96+/100, and Corlien says it’s a must buy for any serious wine collector.
The 2022 MR de Compostella is a barrel selection from all five varieties, which are
assessed blind and undergo trial blends. Those chosen blends are then evaluated
against the previous five vintages. This has a gorgeous bouquet, quite understated
at first, opening with red fruit, briar and a touch of wild rosemary mixed with
potpourri. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, tensile and brimming
with energy. A touch of black pepper and brown spices emerges as this fans out
wonderfully toward the slightly wet stone mineral finish.
ANALYSIS: ALC 14% | RS 2.3 g/L | TA 5.5 g/L | PH 3.53
Always in the pursuit of perfectionism, every vintage marks the start of a new challenge for Mzokona and Bruwer.
A serious wine demanding attention.
The aim with this wine was to take each of the five components and make a
varietal wine in it’s own right. The wines were then tasted blind after one year in
barrel. The wines that scored less than 90 points were not considered for the final
blend. The percentage components of the blend were determined by the scores
achieved in the blind tasting. The resultant cuvee is called De Compostella (‘The
Compilation of Stars’).
