Yo El Rey What Could Go Wrong Sauvignon Blanc 2023

R326.00

Angelo threw caution to the wind and tempered chaos with this skin-contact sauv. Experimental, a little bit wild, layered, and yet somehow, still refined and focused.

Organic grapes from the same pick as Just Kidding are destemmed and pumped into open-top fermentors where they spontaneously ferment on the skins for 7 days. They’re then pressed and aged in old oak barrels for a further 10 months before being bottled for this one-off “What Could Go Wrong?” experiment.

The skin-contact amplifies all the good things a Sauvvy B has to offer and presents a wine with an excited energy, huge texture, zingy tropical palate, and a lingering Woolies granadilla ice-lolly finish.

Description

Yo El Rey translates to “I, the King”—a defiant phrase once scrawled by a young Pablo Picasso on a self-portrait. It’s more than just a name; it’s become a guiding mantra behind the project, and an inspiration to chase wild ideas and always back oneself, no matter how impossible it seems.

The spark for Yo El Rey lit in California back in 2016, during a harvest in Sonoma with Pax Mahle, Scott Schultz, and Jaimee Motley. Two years later, the first release dropped: just 1,700 bottles of a Syrah and Grenache Noir blend. Fast forward, and production has grown to around 7,000 bottles across a handful of cuvées, each made from organically farmed fruit sourced across the Cape.

Yo El Rey backs small growers, champions organic vineyards, and keeps intervention in the cellar to a bare minimum. These are wines with raw energy, brightness, and character—bottles that feel alive, built for people who want to drink differently.
