Angelo van Dyk’s Yo El Rey wines sit at the intersection of mischievousness and seriousness. Keeping it at this meeting point is his annual experiment with a new vineyard, varietal, or winemaking technique – the What Could Go Wrong? label
For the 2022 experiment, Angelo found a 20-year-old Muscat vineyard in the sandy soils of Breedekloof. The grapes were destemmed and fermented with skin-contact for 4 days before being pressed and moved into old oak to age for 10 months.
The end result is the antithesis of traditional Muscat that answers the What Could Go Wrong? question with a contemporary barely-orange orange wine of savoury, nutty depth and whispers of wildflower honey and litchi.
Yo El Rey translates to “I, the King”—a defiant phrase once scrawled by a young Pablo Picasso on a self-portrait. It’s more than just a name; it’s become a guiding mantra behind the project, and an inspiration to chase wild ideas and always back oneself, no matter how impossible it seems.
The spark for Yo El Rey lit in California back in 2016, during a harvest in Sonoma with Pax Mahle, Scott Schultz, and Jaimee Motley. Two years later, the first release dropped: just 1,700 bottles of a Syrah and Grenache Noir blend. Fast forward, and production has grown to around 7,000 bottles across a handful of cuvées, each made from organically farmed fruit sourced across the Cape.
Yo El Rey backs small growers, champions organic vineyards, and keeps intervention in the cellar to a bare minimum. These are wines with raw energy, brightness, and character—bottles that feel alive, built for people who want to drink differently.
