Tasting Notes:

The Foundry Roussanne 2022 shows vivid fruit concentration and intensity from this cooler vintage. The wine shows intense white pear, floral and lifted mineral and savoury aromas. The palate displays bright, fresh acidity on entry, followed by white peach, lemon curd and bread dough and a very fine crystalline minerality and rounded fleshiness. Typical varietal texture rounds out the palate before persistent length and clean finish.

Winemaker Chris Williams is an award-winning winemaker from South Africa.

For 16 vintages he was cellarmaster at the heritage Stellenbosch wine estate, Meerlust. Today, Chris creates exceptional wines of the highest quality under The Foundry label. These wines are crafted using the best quality fruit sourced from the finest sites across the Cape region.

Chris’ winemaking style combines both traditional and modern techniques, to extract the finest expression of fruit and terroir. In the cellar, the goal is minimal intervention, allowing the grapes and the vintage to present their own unique character under the perfect conditions.

VITICULTURE

Sourced from two of the few Roussanne vineyards in South Africa, 40% from our vineyards on the home farm and 60% from our neighbour, this is planted in the Voor Paardeberg on well-weathered Perdeberg decompsed Granite soils. Trellised and spur pruned, this vineyard produced 4.2 tons per hectare in 2022.

VINIFICATION

Hand harvested, chilled overnight and whole-bunch pressed to avoid phenolics typical of this variety.

Juice with a high solids content fermented in seasoned 300-litre Allier hogsheads and about 25% fermented in terracotta clay amphora, with partial malolactic fermentation. Maturation and batonnage sur-lie for 10 months before bottling.
