These very special and characterful grapes grown on the schisty slopes of Kasteelberg, showcase our estate, Roundstone and its tremendous ability to define Syrah grown on Schist soils. These rocky soils limit vine size, hence the clusters and individual grapes in turn remain smaller with a higher skin to juice ration, offering denser, more brooding tannins.
The adapted natural resilience of the dry land SCHIST Syrah on Roundstone Farm produces a wine showing pure freshness and superb concentration. The perfect weather conditions of the 2023 vintage allowed the grapes to express dark fruit combined with hints of Bergamot orange, fragrant violets and nutmeg on the nose. The palate is led by silky, Schist derived tannins that will allow this wine to age phenomenally.

Three main soil types have evolved in the Swartland from the parent materials that dominate the area, these are shale/schist-, granite- and iron-based soils; each with very different characteristics and therefore creating unique growing conditions.
The single terroir wines are expressions of a sense of place in the purest form possible. It’s not easy to pick a favourite, and that’s not the intention. It really is about showcasing how, with the exact same winemaking in the cellar, different vineyards express themselves individually, based on external influences in the soil and climate. To honour each producer, the name of the farm is proudly displayed on each label.
