Bouchard Finlayson Missionvale Chardonnay 2023

R550.00

This flagship Chardonnay pays tribute to the Moravian missionaries who settled in the Hemel-en-Aarde valley in the early-1800s, establishing a hospital on what is today the Bouchard Finlayson estate.

A perfect expression of the Henel-en-Aarde terroir, the Missionvale Chardonnay is produced exclusively from grapes grown and harvested on the estate, taking advantage of the valley’s cool maritime climate to produce a Chardonnay that balances textbook minerality and citrus notes on a foundation of well-integrated oak richness. Indigenous yeast populations initiate fermentation spontaneously within a few days. Matured sur lie in French Oak for 9 months of which 30% new. 11% of the final cuvee was fermented and matured in terra cotta amphora. Bottled with light filtration in January 2024.

Reserved at first, slowing releasing aromas of concise lemon rind, grilled pineapple and white flower. The palate is linear in profile, yet sufficiently textural, courtesy of an underlying macadamia nut intensity. Graceful and finely balanced, the wine is centred around a mouth-watering oyster shell core. Crafted for the long haul- enjoy through 2028.

Description

Bouchard Finlayson is both a family affair, and a place of collaboration.
A labour of love that sees the marriage of Old World winemaking heritage with New World innovation.

The estate was established in South Africa’s Hemel-en-Aarde valley in 1989, a groundbreaking partnership between acclaimed Burgundian winemaker Paul Bouchard and trailblazing local winemaker Peter Finlayson. With a shared passion for Pinot Noir, they transformed the valley’s virgin soil into vineyard, and laid the foundations for the cellar of Bouchard Finlayson. In 2000 the Tollman family purchased the estate, realising a long-held dream to own a vineyard in Africa.
