Storm Vrede Chardonnay 2024

R819.00

Vrede Chardonnay – or Peace Chardonnay – hails from a northeast-facing slope in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley with low-vigour, stony, clay-rich Bokkeveld shale soil.

2024 was a challenging vintage marked by extreme wind speeds in September influenced yields dramatically (especially in the Vrede vineyard). Slightly warmer temperatures in December, January and February resulted in earlier harvest dates with lower alcohols and lovely natural acidity. As always, the 2024 Chardonnays are classically styled and we are extremely excited to follow their evolution for years to come.

“A wine of tension and concentration. Lemongrass, basil stem, lime and concentrated white stone fruit flavours. Absolutely world class.” – Corlien’s notes

Description

After 12 vintages in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley – ‘Heaven-and-Earth’ in Afrikaans – working intimately with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Hannes Storm discovered two tiny parcels of land with particularly exceptional terroirs. The two vineyards, one in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and the other in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, were planted in 2008 to Pinot Noir. Storm’s maiden vintage saw the light in 2012, and after spending 18 months in bottle, the wines were released in August 2014.

In 2015, Storm Wines brought two new additions to the family by producing their Ridge Pinot Noir and Vrede Chardonnay. Ridge Chardonnay, came on board in 2019. Storm Wines is the only producer that crafts single vineyard Pinot Noirs from each of the three appellations in the Hemel-en-Aarde.

Today Hannes and Nathalia Storm strive to steer the purest characteristics of each vineyard site towards bottle and cork. Small production, careful viticulture, minimal intervention in the cellar and a constant nod to the Old World present the wines with distinctive personality and character.
