Reisiger Colombar 2022
R320.00
Produced by Gunter Schultz
100% Colombar
These beautiful 29-year-old bush vines have a few stories to tell. Standing proud on Mostertshoek near Goudini in the Breedekloof and carefully nurtured by Danie “Dumpies” Van der Merwe. Traditionally these grapes would be sold to the local cooperative, but as vines get older and yields drop, it becomes less profitable and often the vineyards are replaced in the interest of economy. But sometimes two friends come together, like Gunter and Danie, and a wine like Reisiger is born.
Only 4 rows were used for this first-off experiment, resulting in just over 1000 bottles.
A clean and focused wine. Upfront lemon, underripe guava, wet river stones, fragrant herbs, yellow apple, and peach blossom. Tight and dry and really opening beautifully after a few hours. We suggest you pull the cork, put it on ice, and wait about an hour before enjoying. It just needs that little bit of extra time in its youth to show its true colours.
Of course, this also suggests that putting a few bottles away for another day is the smart thing to do. We really believe in the long life that’s locked up in this intriguing wine.
Reisiger pays homage to Gunter’s dad, who often took long journeys with the entire family of 5 sons, stopping off in small towns and ultimately they would end in Mosselbay for the family summer holiday. All the little stamps on the label has a story, from the Volksie Bus, surfer codes and African wild life.
We are all Reisigers, people on a journey, writing our own life stories. It is up to each one of us to collect memories as we go and remember the stories that will make our grand children sit at our feet one day and listen intently.
May this wine be one of those memories that stay with you for a long time.
