Rall Ava Syrah 2024

R715.00

From a Schist vineyard on the border between Poseleinberg and Kasteelberg region in the Swartland. The Ava is a tiny selection of Syrah on the most extreme and low yielding site I work with. Fermented with 100% whole bunches and matured in large format oak to truly express the place and soil on which it’s grown.

Now in its eighth release, this 2024 is the most concentrated and aromatic Ava to date. Alcohol of only 12.5% but still such an intense nose of fynbos, herbs, tea from the whole bunches. The palate is incredibly dense with firm tannins and more red in profile compared to the Syrah and red blend and a palate with spice and savoury notes achieved only from Swartland Syrah grown on these extremely low yielding and unforgiving soils.

Description

Gentle giant Donovan Rall is very well travelled as a winemaker, but found his inspiration in the Mediterranean varietals in the Swartland. After graduating with a Viticulture and Oenology degree from Stellenbosch University in 2005 and extensive travels and harvests in other regions, Donovan returned to South Africa in 2007 for a season in the Swartland. Here he worked on his dream of making unique and natural styled wines under his own label, a small batch range “never more than 1000 cases tops” from good fruit from some of the oldest vineyards in Swartland and Stellenbosch. He started with Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Verdelho and Viognier for a white blend, and Syrah, Mouvedre and Grenache for his red blend, but now also make some single varietals. The winemaking is simple, with each parcel allowed to ferment and mature naturally before blending. The wines are full of character and complexity, mark our words these are future classics.
