Nativo The Birds 2022

R161.00

A blend of 43% Shiraz, 29% Mourvedre and 28% Grenache Noir
All grapes are from Billy Hughes’ own farm, Kasteelsig, on the northern side of Kasteelberg in the Swartland. Here Billy works according to biodynamic guidelines, and has established himself as a phenomenal grape grower and winemaker too.

A juicy, fruity and spicy, medium-bodied Swartland red blend. Generous red fruit flavours balanced with soft, earthy tannins and bright acidity lift on finish. Each cultivar is handpicked and vinified separately to allow flavours to develop fully.

Oh, and we love the label too. Billy says these Southern Red Bishops always follow him when he’s near the reeds on the farm.

The Grenache and Mourvedre were fermented in open fermenters, with a third of the grapes wholebunch fermented. The Shiraz was 100% destemmed, pressed in a basket press, and aged in old French oak barrels. Blended after 3 months of settling, allowing smooth integration of flavours. The wine is unfiltered and unfined to ensure maximum flavour and mouthfeel.

ANALYSIS: ALC 13.5% | RS 2.49 g/l | pH 3.83

Description

The name Nativo encompasses allusions to Billy’s native origins, his progress to becoming a naturalised South African, and desire to produce a wine reflective of its origins infused with site-specific characteristics. As such, Billy makes sure that a minimally invasive approach to winemaking is taken.

Nativo is recognised by the minimalist label which features an embossed, subtly elliptical circle. This is not only the shape of the stain made by the base of a wine glass, but also alludes to a sense of “coming full circle”, as in the case of the Hughes family and its wines, and the natural cycle of life.
