Mullineux Roundstone 2023

R670.00

Syrah, Grenache Noir, Cinsault

Our Roundstone Estate wines are born from the land and shaped by human hands. Manual harvesting ensures only the best grapes are selected, preserving vine health and quality. Diverse South African heritage and Mediterranean varieties are chosen for their proven resilience in the Swartland over the past 20 years that yield wines of elegance and balanced intensity.

Vineyard Details: Here on the rugged slopes of Kasteelberg Mountain in South Africa’s Swartland, Roundstone Estate spans 107 hectares of ancient schist derived soils, kissed by our generous sun. Our journey began with a vision to craft fine wines that not only capture the essence of this unique terroir but also ensure its vitality for generations to come. Since 2008, we’ve embraced organic practices, evolving into fully regenerative organic viticulture by 2025.

The perfect weather conditions of the 2023 vintage allowed the grapes to express dark fruit combined with hints of fleshy nectarines, shyer strawberry and fresh juniper berries. The palate is led by vibrant schist-derived tannins that will allow this wine to age phenomenally. Best served at 16 to 18 °C. Decanting is recommended when the wine is opened in the first 10 years from vintage.

Description
Mullineux was established in 2007, when Chris and Andrea Mullineux settled in the Swartland wine region, 60 kilometers north of Cape Town. Within a very short time period the winery established itself as one of South Africa’s most celebrated wine brands, both locally and on the international front. By 2023 the winery had received over fifty 5-star ratings from Platter’s South African Wine Guide, as well as being awarded Platter’s Winery of the Year an unprecedented five times in 2023, 2020, 2019, 2016 and 2014.

In addition, Andrea was named Wine Enthusiast’s 2016 International Winemaker of the Year and in 2016 Chris & Andrea were Tim Atkin’s South African Winemakers of the Year.

Three main soil types have evolved in the Swartland from the parent materials that dominate the area, these are shale/schist-, granite- and iron-based soils; each with very different characteristics and therefore creating unique growing conditions.

The single terroir wines are expressions of a sense of place in the purest form possible. It’s not easy to pick a favourite, and that’s not the intention. It really is about showcasing how, with the exact same winemaking in the cellar, different vineyards express themselves individually, based on external influences in the soil and climate. To honour each producer, the name of the farm is proudly displayed on each label.
