Hagen Viljoen makes this wine from two different vineyards in the Piekenierskloof, an old vine block planted in 1967 and a younger block planted in 2014. The soil consists mainly of coarsely weathered Table Mountain Sandstone, which keeps the vigour in check for these bush-vine cultivated Grenache vines. The significant diurnal temperature fluctuation from this region, enables the vines to benefit from a prolonged and even ripening process during the warm summer months, thereby facilitating optimal flavour development and berry maturation.
Wild strawberry, cranberry, and earthy notes on the nose, opening to white pepper and lavender. The palate is characterized by a red fruit with chalky tannins and a mineral savoury finish.
ANALYSIS: Alc 13.28% | RS 2.0 g/L | pH 3.58 | TA 5.1 g/L
The grapes were hand-picked with 80% whole-cluster fermentation in open-top tanks. The fermentation was done with indigenous yeasts and punched down twice daily to ensure gentle extraction and even maceration. The wine was left on the skins for 15 days before being pressed off into seasoned 500L French Oak barrels and concrete tanks for 10 months on the lees. The wine was bottled without any finings and minimal filtration.
