BLANKbottle Kortpad Kaaptoe 2021

R266.00

The Kortpad has always been an intriguing wine, made with 100% Fernao Pires from old, unirrigated bush vines, grown in Swartland. This is a blend of 4 different pickings of the same vineyard. An early fresh component, 2 optimum ripe batches and then a later pungent ripe one. 100% Fernao Pires a.k.a Maria Gomez. The grapes were picked at different ripeness levels in 4 pickings and cooled overnight to 4 degrees celsius. The next morning the grapes were handled in different ways. Some de-stemmed and pressed, some de-stemmed with a few hours of skin contact – then pressed, some fermented as whole clusters and some as de-stemmed on the skin fermentation. Fermented and aged in various vessels, French oak (nothing new) and amphora after which it spent 10 months on the leese and was then blended and bottled.

Description

BLANKbottle has broken just about every mould there is with close to 40 different wines produced every year and almost half of them never to be repeated. No label bares information about grape varietal(s) or blend. It all started in 2004 when a lady came to Pieter to buy some wine and asked for anything but Shiraz. “I don’t drink Shiraz” were her exact words. Pieter poured her a glass of wine. She loved it and bought 3 cases. It was 100% Shiraz. Pieter says: “It’s true, we do judge a book by its cover”. This is why Walser only indicates whether the bottle is red or white – he never gives mention to the grape varietal(s). “I want nothing on my labels”.
