Inspired by the Mediterranean climate and their love of food and superbly crafted wine, the Joubert family has been producing the Baleia range of premium wines and olive oils since 2009.

The success behind Baleia Wines lies in the location of their vineyards. Baleia is the only winery on the Lower Duiwenhoksrivier in Vermaaklikheid, which makes their wines unique in style.

The accumulation of soil and limestone particles into a solid, crusted layer in which the vine roots struggle to reach water and minerals along with the high calcium content found in this layer of hardened soils naturally hinders the growth and mineral uptake of the vine. Syrah, which is naturally high in vigour, is beautifully shaped by this conglomeration effect, which positively stresses the vine to produce a wine of consequence that truly reflects sense of place.

Corlien’s note: An intense upfront nose of black olives and dried fynbos with black currant and white pepper spice following through. This wine is packed with power, yet there is an elegance and freshness on the finish that makes it utterly delicious to sip all afternoon.
