Ridge Chardonnay hails from a cool, eastern slope on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge with low-vigour, stony, clay-rich Bokkeveld shale soil.
An elegant wine with crisp fruit and a long, softly textured finish – characteristic of the site’s cool, elevated, low-vigour, stony, clay-rich slope.
There are 3 Pinot Noirs and 2 Chardonnays this year, all made in rather small quantities. We are pleased to be able to sell these sought after wines to our discerning clients every year.

The 2019 Chardonnay harvest will be remembered as extremely challenging and extremely low-yielding but immensely rewarding. We were lucky in the sense that fires were put out long before they could reach the Vrede vineyard but challenges from a fungal perspective kept us on our toes otherwise. Due to the prolonged drought conditions in the Cape Winelands, yields in the Vrede Chardonnay vineyard dropped to an all-time low of 1.5 t/ha, after which a wine with pure, refined character was bottled.
Towards the latter half of 2018, we embarked on an exciting new project, culminating in Ridge Chardonnay 2019, a classically styled expression that showcases the unadulterated characteristics of Bokkeveld shale soils on a cooler site – a higher altitude and a cool eastern slope.
“Hannes Storm has been focussing on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the Hemel and Aarde wine growing region of South Africa for some time now. He has achieved, well deserved, cult status for these Burgundian varieties not only in Hemel and Aarde but in South Africa as a whole. Each wine is a true reflection of the specific vineyard sites and expresses remarkable purity of fruit.”
