Craig and Anne Wessels have become known for their Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon from Hemel-en-Aarde. They added Pinot Noir to the estate grown vineyard collection with 2016 being the maiden vintage released in 2018.
With Pinot Noir and Chardonnay ripening early in the season and Cabernet Sauvignon about a month later, Grenache became the creative outlet in between in 2017. The Wanderlust label will be reserved for experimental and learning projects every year with the Grenache grapes are from a neighbouring farm, Vrede, in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley.
Craig used 3 different fermentation techniques, all of them with a level of carbonic maceration involved and spent about 7 months in older oak barrels. The result is bright, fresh cherry and strawberry flavours with an interesting savoury, smoky note coming through. Totally addictive!
Remember this is a once off wine, so if you don’t buy now, you’ll miss out altogether.
I am particularly looking forward to the 2018 experiment CSB.
