Restless River Wanderlust Pinot Noir 2020

This label is for the interesting projects Craig tackles, and is never repeated. It is often with grapes from other farms and usually includes some interesting winemaking technique. This vintage is Pinot Noir from their own
Le Luc vineyard as well as grapes from a neighbouring farm. A throwback to the way wine was made “back in the day”. Whole bunches were put in open top old vats and “footstomped” to crush the berries and set the juice free.
Fermentation started spontaneously and during this time the skins were lightly punched down every day. Thereafter pressing was done with an old hand operated basked press. It all seems like really hard work to me. The wine was aged in mostly old oak for about 1 year. The result is a delicate wine, showing cherries, but also a touch of umami. It has a fresh acidity with a fine tannin grip.

Craig and Anne Wessels started planting vines in 1999 and since have become well known as one of the premium producers in the valley. The valley is well renowned for its cooler climate and the Wessels believe it is fundamental that their vines reflect this distinctive, marginal environment in which they grow; passing their unique characteristics onto the grapes, and ultimately, the wine.
