Its antique colour and savoury texture combined with vibrant fruit aromas make this wine a unique expression of Cape heritage.
‘If Sauvignon Blanc is “easy to sell but boring to make”, as Adam Mason puts it, then Semillon is arguably the opposite. This comes from selected Semillon Gris grapes in Anton Roux’s legendary Franschhoek vineyard and is made with carbonic maceration, showing some pink colour. Effortlessly complex, with savoury grip and rose petal and talcum powder notes. Intriguing stuff. Drink 2019-26.’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 94/100
‘As sibling, from venerable Franschhoek vines, but copper-hued ‘gris’ much rarer, possibly red semillon mutation. Carbonic maceration & oaking, trim 2018 hard to pin down: subtle red berries, leafy, but also mineral. Intriguing, individual.’ – Platter’s Guide, 4* (88/100)
Raised by Wolves is the brainchild of Adam Mason winemaker at Mulderbosch Vineyards. The name is a parody of the constant one-upmanship of winemakers: My wine is a single vineyard. … Yeah well my wine is naturally fermented. … Oh yeah well my wine is hand sorted by berry. And Adam’s response: Well my wines are all of the above and I was raised by wolves.
The Raised by Wolves wines are all vinified with minimalistic intervention to allow the true character of the varietal and the site-specific terroir to shine through.
