This wine by Franco Lourens has come a long way in a relatively short time. Franco first produced this wine, honouring his lovely wife, in 2015. We were hooked from day one. But that was just a taste of what this wine can become. In November 2018 Franco received 5 stars for the 2017 vintage at the launch of the Platters Guide 2019. A fantastic achievement for a young talented guy.
Franco became assistant winemaker at the highly acclaimed Alheit Vineyards in 2017. Here he can expand his knowledge and passion for Chenin Blanc whilst also having the freedom to make his own wines. He is quick to thank Chris Alheit for his guidance in vineyard selection as well as cellar practices, but truth be told, this Lindi Carien was destined to become something big from the first vintage.
The blend is made up as follows:
37% Verdelho from the oldest block in SA (Stellenbosch)
31% Chenin Blanc (Swartland)
15% Grenache Blanc (Stellenbosch) skin fermented
12% Roussanne (Voor Paardeberg)
5% Clairette Blanche (Stellenbosch) matured in Amphora Pots
No yeast, acid, enzymes or fining agents were used. The wine matured for 10 months in old French Barrels and Amphora Pots.
Corlien says: Smooth sailing! An elegant blend with a gentle nose and beautifully restrained finish. She lures you in but keeps you guessing. Every sip reveals another side of this complex yet lighter style wine.
