Winner of SA Shiraz Challenge Top 12 Shiraz competition of 2020.
Koelfontein is proud to stand along other leading Shiraz producers of South Africa with this, the 2017 vintage. It’s not a complete newcomer to awards, with several medals achieved over the years since the maiden 2004 vintage.
There has been a slight style change over the years, with the wine heading into a more elegant style lately. It can also be said that the vineyards are of course now more mature, and therefore the fruit quality is improving. This vintage was the height of the drought years in the Cape and as such rather small volumes were produced. The effects of the drought will still continue through the 2018 and 2019 vintage releases and it’s only in 2020 that production increased a bit again.
Thankfully winter 2020 so far has been good on the farm, with dams full after really good rains in July. A good snowfall also ensures that the vineyards can go into there much needed winter rest to build strength for the growing season. This also has a very positive effect on fertility in the vines, so all round good news in 2020 for Koelfontein as a farm.
A little tasting note:
Layers of ripe berries, spice and smoky notes lures one to this full bodied wine. Sip after sip will reward the drinker with velvety fruit and grippy tannins. Definitely a wine to be enjoyed with a rich stew, ostrich steaks or spicy food.
