A brand new wine from André Bruyns, even though simply referred to as “Red” this is 100% Syrah. Although the grape variety is the same the soil structure of the vineyards are granite and schist respectively. There’s some whole bunch fermentation and you might pick that up on the nose. A medium bodied wine with savoury black olive, fynbos and fine grainy tannins.
The first time we met André, we were not only bowled over by his White Blend, which was then the only wine on offer under his City on a Hill private label. His humble approach and almost shy way of presenting his wines, made us realise he’s in it for the love of wine and not for the show. That’s what makes it so much more special when a person like this receives 5 stars from the Platter Wine Guide panel. Well done André, this wine deserves it and so do you!
In André’s words: “Starting your own wine business can be exhilarating and frightening at the same time, but to be honest, it’s been a wonderful time! 2018 marked the fourth vintage of City on a Hill Wine Company and I can’t believe how quickly these vintages have flown by.”
André is the extra pair of hands in the David & Nadia Sadie Cellar where he can craft his own wines as well as working with undoubtedly leaders in the Paardeberg ward of the Swartland.
City on a Hill Chenin Blanc is not a single vineyard wine, but a wine focussed on a very specific terroir within the Paardeberg of the Swartland. Juice underwent spontaneous fermentation in seasoned barrels and minimal intervention followed. The wine will develop in the coming years and will reward good cellaring.
