Sakkie Mouton grew up on the West Coast, just outside Vredendal, surrounded by vineyards and farming. After studying viticulture and winemaking, he spent five years working harvests around the world. He eventually returned home with a clear idea: to tell the story of the West Coast through wine.
In 2019, he started Sakkie Mouton Family Wines. His focus is on the vineyards and the unique sites around Vredendal and Koekenaap. The region is warm and rugged, but the Atlantic brings cool winds that help keep the vines fresh. Many of the vineyards grow in poor, decomposed sandstone soils, which can give the wines real concentration and character.
Sakkie takes a minimal-intervention approach in the cellar. He wants the wines to show where they come from, rather than hiding the character of the vineyard. The result is a fascinating expression of a part of South Africa that is still finding its place on the wine map.
